CUTTING & PUNCHES
Cutting & Punches
For any leather worker good sharp cutting tools are an essential part of the making up process. For light thinner leathers you may prefer to use shears or leather scissors or a rotary knife. For heavier weight leathers such as veg tan a good knife or pro shears will suit.
An important part of leather craft is looking after these sharp edges – we have a section on strops and chalks that can be used for maintaining the sharpness of blades and for punches.
Using a correct cutting mat underneath will also go a long way to keeping blades and edges sharp.
For hole punching there are rotary punches, punch sets or individual punches for punching near edges, for belt and strap making, and for punching holes within a larger area of leather, with many sizes to choose from.
Skiving tools and machines are essential for lessening the thickness of leather where needed to enable easier fixing of rivets or snaps for example and also for splitting leather to desired substances.
